IM R.R. Laxman of Chennai won the St Joseph's College of Engineering National Under-25 Chess Championship being played St Joseph's College of Engineering in the Old Mamallapuram Road in south Chennai on December 21.

Laxman, 1983-born, scored an important penultimate round win against V.A.V. Rajesh with the white pieces. Rajesh messed up the modern defence playing e6 instead of d6. Laxman wrested the initiative right from the opening. Rajesh gave two pawns to get life to his pieces, and Laxman won two pawns. The big-made Laxman was thus four pawns up when Rajesh resigned. Laxman won round right and the championship with a round to spare.

Laxman leads with 7.5/8 and has won the event with a round to spare. Five players are tied for the second place with six points. It includes Deep Sengupta, Arjun Tiwari, V.A.V. Rajesh, Ram S Krishnan and P. Karthikeyan. Laxman works for ICF in Chennai. This is his third National title. The day before this event he arrived from Singapore playing the Singapore Masters.

The day after this event he is travelling to Al-Ain via Dubai for the Asian Club Team Championship. It was a strong performance from the top seed who has won the event with a round to spare. In round nine, others can fight for the second place.
