Asian junior champion of 2007, International Master P. Karthikeyan scored a fine final round win over V.A.V. Rajesh also of Chennai to take the clear second place in the St Joseph's National Youth (U-25) Chess Championship.

IM R.R. Laxman of ICF, Chennai had won the title with a round to spare. He made a final round draw with Arjun Tiwari to end undefeated on 8/9 with a clear point ahead of the rest.

Karthikeyan won an exchange and also the game to move to seven points and take the clear second place. "The win was easy" said Karthikeyan who spotted a tactic early in the middlegame. The organisers, St Joseph's College of Engineering were delighted since Kartikeyan is a student of this college.

The third place went to Ram S Krishnan who remained undefeated with a draw against Deep Sengupta. "I offered a draw, Deep rejected, later after some complicated play, we arrived at a rook and single pawn ending where he offered me a draw and I agreed," said Ram S Krishnan of BSNL, Chennai.

The prizes were distributed by N. Tamilselvan, Inspector General of Police (Operations) in the presence of Dr Babu Manoharan, Director, St Joseph's College of Engineering.
