International Master Ashwin Jayaram won the Asian Junior
Championship playing out an exciting final round draw against FIDE
Master Vidit Santosh Gujrathi in the Sai Ram Engineering College
Asian Junior Chess Championship 2008 at Hotel Vijay Park, here
today.
Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes retained her Asian Junior Girls
title with a comfortable final round draw against Woman
International Master Padmini Rout. Needing just a draw to emerge a
clear winner, Mary got just that, as she split the points with the
Orissa junior in 31 moves. The draw took Mary Ann Gomes to an
unassailable 7.5 points.
In the much awaited top board game in the boys section, FIDE Master
Vidit Santosh Gujrathi crossed swords with overnight leader and
talented Tamil Nadu junior Ashwin Jayaram. The crucial round saw
young Maharashtra boy trying to snatch the initiative with some
unorthodox play. But Ashwin was upto the task, as he sacrificed his
rook for Vidid's bishop, and seized control of play. An exchange
down but with a two pawn plus position, Ashwin forced Vidit to split
points after 54 moves.
With this draw Ashwin and Lalith finished on the top of leaderboard,
but a better tie-break gave Ashwin the Asian Junior Champion title.
The Asian junior title fetches Ashwin Jayaram a nine game
Grandmaster Norm. Andhra lad Lalith Babu who finished second in the
final standings will be awarded International Master title by FIDE
(World Chess Federation).
The important final round game saw M R Lalith Babu coasting to a
facile victory over seasoned Rahul Sangma. Showing no signs of
pressure the Andhra lad, executed his moves with confidence and won
the the game in 35 moves. Lalith remained undefeated in this event,
continuing his good form that fetched him the National Junior title
last fortnight.
