By
R.R.Vasudevan, FIDE Arbiter
International Master Aswin Jayaram defeated overnight joint leader
Vishnu Prasanna and moved into joint lead after the sixth round in
the Sai Ram Engineering College Asian Junior Chess Championship 2008
at Hotel Vijay Park, here today. Sharing the lead with Aswin are
International Master Baskar Adhiban, FIDE Master Vidit Santosh
Gujrathi and National Junior Champion M R Lalith Babu, all with five
points. Right behind the leaders at 4.5 points are IMs Deep Sengupta,
Shyam Sundar, FMs Shyam Nikhil, Nitin, Priyadharshan and Vishnu
Prasanna and Rahul Sangma.
Woman Grandmaster and Olympiad Silver Medallist Mary Ann Gomes
defeated Kiran Monisha Mohanty joining the leaders Woman
International Master Kruttika Nadig and Woman FIDE Master Bhakthi
Kulkarni. The trio share the top spot with five points, and half a
point behind the them is Woman International Master Padmini Rout.
In the slugfest to for the top honors, the top board game between
Vidit Gujrathi and Adhiban ended in a relatively quick draw. The
brief stoppage of play caused by electrical short circuit, might
have disturbed their concentration. As the play resumed after a
delay of half an hour, the draw was signed up after 25 moves. The
draw ensured two more juniors - Aswin Jayaram and M R Lalith Babu -
joining the top of the table.
Aswin-Vishnu proved an exciting one, with both the players going for
the jugular. Right into the middle game, Aswin showed enterprise
going for attack, by leaving his piece en prise. In the exchange
melee that continued, Vishnu overlooked a bishop check that spelled
his doom.
National Junior Champion M R Lalith Babu outplayed Debashis Das in a
Slav game that lasted 43 moves. As the game appeared moving towards
equality, Lalith obtained a passed pawn in the "c" file adding
pressure to Das's queenside. A quiet blockade held up Lalith dynamic
intents, as the action shifted to the kingside. Moving his lone pawn
on the flank, Lalith got one up on Das, as the latter overlooked a
intermittent pawn queening move.
Woman Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes showed her experience at the right
juncture, as she overcame a stiff resistence from Orissa junior
Kiran Monisha Mohanty. In the Sicilian game that lasted four hours
and 33 moves, Mary thwarted continuous attack from Kiran. Once the
attack subsided, Mary's initiative took her to the full point.
Earlier the day's round was inaugurated by All India Chess
Federation, Vice President, Sameer Salgaocar in the boys section,
and by the Treasurer, All India Chess Federation, Bharat Singh
Chauhan in the girls section. Three more rounds remain in this
event, with the winner being awarded the International Master title
and a Grandmaster Norm.
