Round Three Reports
Shalmali Gagare upsets Kiran Monisha Mohanthy, in sole
lead
By R.R.Vasudevan, FIDE Arbiter
Shalmali Gagare stunned higher seed Woman International
Master Kiran Monisha Mohanthy to take sole lead with three
points from as many rounds in the Sai Ram Engineering
College Asian Junior Chess Championship at Hotel Vijay Park,
here today. In an even paced game, luck smiled at Shalmali
in the end game as Kiran overlooked a nice rook and bishop
combination that netted Shalmali the full point.
Seeded players scored hard fought victories in the Boys
section on day three. International Masters Adhiban, Aswin
Jayaram along with National Junior Champion M R Lalith Babu
lead the table with a 3/3 score. Showing confidence beyond
his years, 16 year old Adhiban played a smooth game in
Queens Gambit declined variation, scoring a technical rook
and pawn win in 58 moves. In seemingly, equal position
Adhiban found the right moves to disconcert Ashwath, forcing
him into a tight corner. The impressive technical win puts
Adhiban on the top of the table, and he faces in form
National Junior Champion Lalith Babu in the next round.
In another top board game, International Master Aswin
Jayaram scored a stylish victory over Debashis Das in a
Sicilian game lasting 49 moves. Dynamic middle game play was
the order of the day, as Aswin gave up his prized queen for
three pieces. In the ensuing end game, Aswin's over the
board dynamics was more than sufficient for Das who gave up
as the advantage went beyond even compensation.
Grandmaster Norm holder Deep Sengupta's woes continued as he
was held to a draw by local boy R K Ranjith. The French
opening game, saw black equalising without much ado, as Deep
was well on way towards win. A combinative miscalculation in
the queen and rook ending saw him venture into a queen and
rook versus queen ending. Except that Sengupta's king was
exposed without any defence against Ranjit's series of
perpetual checks.
