By R.R.Vasudevan,FIDE Arbiter

Grandmaster Norm holder Deep Sengputa suffered a heavy defeat in the hands of Chennai youngster T U Navin Kanna in the second round of the Sai Ram Engineering College Asian Junior Chess Championships at Hotel Vijay Park, here today. Top seed International Master SP Sethuraman dropped half a point against Andhra junior T Purushothaman. The Sicilian dragon game promised to be interesting but petered out to a quick draw through perpetual checks.

In form, International Master Baskar Adhiban scored over talented Tamil Nadu junior T Abhay. The Guicco Piano game went as per theory, and right into the middle game the players were about to repeat the moves. But then, Adhiban saw a bit further than his opponent who fell for the deadly back rank trap. Facing with a loss of the piece or mate Abhay gave up. Adhiban along with nine others including IMs Karthikeyan, Shyam Sundar and Aswin Jayaram lead the table with two points from as many rounds.

Defending Champion International Master Karthikeyan scored a hard fought victory over P Saravana Krishnan in a game arising from a complicated middle game. Karthikeyan bold kingside attack, as he went all out for the win, decided the issue. Fellow International Master Shyam Sundar's game against Sagar Shah of Mumbai went upto the wire. Shyam was a bit lucky to snatch the full point, as his opponent blundered and lost on time, missing out a possible draw.

In the girls section, the top seeds Kruttika Nadig and Kiran Monisha Mohanty coasted to full points with contrasting victories. Kruttika scored over seasoned Mohanapriya without much ado, while Kiran was extended by Meenu Rajendiran for more than four hours. Kruttika shares the lead with 2.0 points along with five others.

68 boys and 34 girls representing six countries complete the line up in this International event. Seven more rounds remain in this event, with the winner being awarded a Grandmaster Norm along with International Master title.
