Round One Reports

Spectacular start by Natl "B" Champion and World Under 16
Gold medallist B.Adhiban lit up the inaugural round in the
Asian Junior Chess Championship 2008 at Hotel Vijay Park
here today. Sacrificing a piece early in the middle game
against Anwesh Upadhyaya, the young star went all out
sacrificed a rook and the in the ensuing endgame proved that
his three pawns were more than adequate for the extra
knight. In the twin upsets that mattered, two FIDE Masters
from Tamil Nadu, S Nitin and Shyam Nikhil lost to their
lesser rated opponents Shardag Gagare and Yashas
respectively.
In the girls championship, the seeded players had it easy
with Olympic Silver medallist Mary Ann Gomes and top seed
Krittika Nadig leading the show.
Promising Goa player and WFM Bhakthi Kulkarni scored a
facile win over M Khushboo of TN. But it was a good day for
TN hopefuls as International Masters
SP Sethuraman, Shyam Sundar and Aswin Jayaram scored
important victories.
The nine round event concludes on 14th December, with the
winner being awarded a Grandmaster Norm along with
International Master title.
