Shardul Gagare Upsets Nitin

Shardul Gagare Upsets Nitin

By Arvind Aaron

Shardul Gagare of Shirdi, Maharashtra shocked FIDE Master S. Nitin of Salem, Tamil Nadu in the opening round of the Sri Sai Ram Engineering sponsored Asian Junior at Hotel Vijay Park.

Shardul, a student of R.V. Gokhale tacitly attacked the white queen to over burden it and win pawns and the game against S. Nitin. Another higher rated player to lose was Shyam Nikhil of Tamil Nadu after Yashas (Kar) attacked and won.

The boys section was otherwise smooth one for the other higher rated players. Top seed Sethuraman won a rook for knight and won against Shiven Khosla. Adhiban was confident after sacrificing a knight for two pawns to inflict a defeat on Anwesh Upadhyay.

In the girls section, top seed Kruttika used her two rooks to cage the king of Aparajita to win. Defending champion Mary Ann took time but made sure she won without problems against G. Apurva.

Among girls, unknown Supriya Joshi of Mumbai, overcame P. Uthra by winning a rook for knight against the centralised king of the Tamil Nadu player. Eight rounds remain to be played.
