Humpy Takes 1-0 Lead
By Arvind Aaron
World No.2 Koneru Humpy of ONGC, Vijayawada moved closer to the
semi-finals when she took a 1-0 lead by defeating Shen Yang of China in
the best of two quarter final match on September 7.
In a Slav defence, Humpy noticed a brilliant tactic to win two pawns with
a knight sacrifice on he 27th turn to win with ease. Earlier, Shen Yang
weakened her own king side making weak moves.
Humpy took a good measure of risk to win playing nicely in 31 moves. In
another decisive quarter final game, former world women's champion
Stefanova went down playing white to the oldest and most experienced Pia
Cramling.
There are three Asians in the last eight of the World Women's Chess
Championship at Nalchik, Russia.
The results of quarter finals, game one: Antoaneta Stefanova (Bul) lost to
Pia Cramling (Swe), Lilit Mrktchian (Arm) drew with Hou Yifan (Chn),
