Humpy In Last Eight

Humpy In Last Eight
By Arvind Aaron

India had a mixed round three when Koneru Humpy advanced to the fourth round while Dronavalli Harika was eliminated from the World Women's Chess Championship which is taking place at Nalchik in Russia.

Humpy who drew the black game on September 4, had no problem winning with the white pieces against Hoang Thanh Trang of Hungary for a 1.5-0.5 score.

Facing a Dutch defence, Humpy as white expanded her queen side and made use of the space created to troop her rooks and win in 38 moves.

Harika had unresolved problems right from the opening with the black colour in the Sicilian Najdorf. She dropped pawns and in the ending, Mrktchian played a deft pawn move creating a passed pawn to win the opposite colour bishop ending on the 41st turn.
