Abhijit Kunte Gets Bronze

Grand Master Abhijit Kunte of Indian Oil, Pune won the final round against
Ni Hoa of China in the final round to finish third in the 6th Asian
Individual Chess Championship that concluded at Cebu City in the
Philippines on Sep 29.
G.N.Gopal of Aluva in Kerala became the other Indian to qualify. Five
Chinese players took the ten qualifying slots leaving two for India and
one each for Indonesia, Philippines and Bangladesh. They advance to the
World Cup in Siberia later this year. Fifth seed Ganguly and the higher
rated Kolkata players Chanda and Neelotpal Das did not make it.
This event was held from September 19 to 30. Twenty nine GMs, 1 WGM, 18
IMs, 8 FMs from 17 nations took part among the 72 players.
