Ivana Furtado Retains World Title
By Arvind Aaron
India's little champion Ivana Maria Furtado of Goa won the World Girls
Under-8 Title with a final round draw to end on 9/11, a clear half point
ahead of the rest of the field. Thus, she regains her title. Overall,
India won one title in Girls Under-8 and picked up two bronzes in the Boys
Under-10 section through Prince Bajaj of Delhi and Girls Under-14 through
Shalmali Gagare of Rahauri (near Shirdi) in Maharashtra.
Backed by below average nerves, Indians lost out on many medals. India had
won five titles and ten medals in the previous edition at Batumi. Russians
came with a bang for missing out on Batumi for political reasons winning
four of the 12 titles. China and Georgia won two titles each followed by
India, Israel, USA and Romania taking one each.
