Ivana Furtado Moves Into Lead
By Arvind Aaron
Ivana Furtado of Goa scored a round nine win to move into joint lead in
the World Under-8 Girls Chess Championship at Antalya, Turkey on November
26. Her win in the rook and pawn ending took her tally to 7.5, the same as
Gunay Mammadzada of Azerbaijan. Two rounds remain to be played.
In the Boys Under-14 section India had a setback when Vidit played poorly
and lost. FIDE Master Vidit Gujrathi has a chance to win both title and
medal if he wins both his remaining games. He is on 7/9 and tied for the
third place half a point behind the joint leaders.
Overall, at best, after round nine, India can win two titles and medals in
six sections. In Under-10, Prince Bajaj (7/9) of Delhi has an outside
chance to win a medal. He shares the fourth place.
In the girls under-18 section, Mary Ann Gomes has a chance to win a medal.
She is on 6.5/9 and in joint third place.
In case of a low scoring finish in the Girls Under-14 section, three of
the Indian girls can try to win medals as they are on 6.5/9 and tied for
the fifth place. Our players include J.Mohana Priya, Shalmali Gagare and
NLV Anusha.
In the Girls Under-12 section, Priyanka Kumari of Jharkhand suffered a
defeat and has now lost title chances and has an outside chance of a medal
on 6.5/9. She is tied for the sixth place.
Indians have lost all medal hopes in the remaining sections. It includes
Girls U-10 and U-16 and four Boys Sections, Under-8, 12, 16 and 18.
The Russians warmed the pool this year making things difficult for the
Indians. Remember that at Batumi they were not present due to political
reasons and are making most of the missed opportunity last year. Also,
most of these Indians were busy playing National Age-Group domestic chess
in India from September until as close to this event as Nov 15.
