Vidit Joins Lead In Boys Under-14

Vidit Gujrathi of Nasik beat his Maharashtra team-mate Prasanna Rao of Mumbai in the seventh round to join Russia's Sanan Sjugirov in the lead in the Boys Under-14 section at the World Youth Chess Festival on Saturday.

In the Girls Under-18 section, WIM Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata was defeated. She slipped from sole lead to joint lead with six points from seven rounds. Four rounds remain to be played in this event which is played at Antalya, Turkey.

Under-18: Indians have lost medal chances in this section with all three Andhra players on four points. Dasari Sai Srinivas lost, Rohith drew and M.R.Lalith Babu won.

Under-16: R.Ashwath won to reach 5/7 to share the ninth place while Adhiban was defeated on four and Nitin won to climb to 4.5 points.

Under-14: Vidit Gujrathi of Nasik beat Prasanna Rao of Mumbai to join second seed Sanan Sjugirov of Russia in the lead with 6/7. Top seed S.P.Sethuraman of Chennai drew to reach 5.5 points and share the third place. Other Indians: Prasanna Rao 5, Mehar Chinna Reddy 4.5.

Under-12: Sahaj Grover scored a win to reach 5.5/7 while G.V.Sai Krishna was defeated on 4.5. Sahaj is tied for the fifth place and could get a medal. He is a former World Under-10 champion.

Under-10: India had a setback in this section when Wang Tong Sen of China (7/7) beat Prince Bajaj (5.5) of Delhi to take a clear one point lead. Most of the Indians lost in this round. It included defending champion Girish Koushik (4/7) who has lost his title winning opportunity. The only Indian who won was Shardul Gagare (5.5) who beat another Indian Ch Mohineesh (4.5). Prince and Shardul are tied for the fifth place with 5.5 points.

Under-8: Harshal Shahi is on six points from seven rounds and is tied for the third place. Other Indians: Jerome Jorge Ebenezer, Hetul Shah 5 each, Shivam Srivastav, Yeshwanth Nagasai 4.5 each, Arjun Bharat 4. Harshal beat Jerome and Hetul beat Revanth Reddy in an all-Indian pairing.

Girls Section:

Under-18: Mary Ann lost with the white pieces to WIM Katerina Nemcova of Czech Republic in a crucial top board game. Both players are leading with 6/7. After defeat number three, Kiran Mohanty is on four while R.Preethi won and has reached four points.

Under-16: Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa scored over Valerie Forgues of France to reach 5/7 and tie for the ninth place. Uthra drew to reach 3.5 while Mitali Patil also drew to reach four points. Pon N.Krithikha drew to reach 4.5 points.

Under-14: Shalmali Gagare drew to reach 5/7 and share the sixth place while J.Mohaha Priya has run out of steam to be defeated and stay on 4.5. Top seed Georgian and two Asians from the Philippines and Vietnam are ahead with 6/7.

Under-12: Priyanka Kumari of Jharkhand played a draw with white in round seven to move to 5.5/7 and is now tied for the fourth place. Other Indians: B.Pratusha 5, J.Vaishnavi, Ch Sahajasri 4.5 each, Anjana S Krishna 4.

Under-10: Indians had fallen back too much behind that they started to win. Both M.Mahalakshmi and G.Aishwarya won to reach 4.5/7. However, U.Ashwini lost playing on 3.5.

Under-8: C.H.Meghna of Kerala and Ivana Furtado of Goa scored round seven wins to reach and tie for the second place on 5.5 points. Though jolted, Nguyen Thanh Thuy Tien is of Vietnam is leading with 6/7. Other Indians: C.R.Varsha, P.Preety 3.5 each and Muthyala Bansi Prathima 3.
