Sasikiran Advances, Other Indians Dont

Krishnan Sasikiran, of ONGC, Chennai advanced to the second round after he was fully stretched by Sergei Zhigalko of Belarus in round one of the FIDE World Chess Cup happening at Khanty-Mansiysk in Siberian part of Russia on Monday.

After the classical chess games were drawn at 1-1, Sasikiran made two more draws in the first tie-break and won the fifth game and drew the sixth to win the draw dominated match 3.5-2.5.

Higher rated P.Harikrishna of Hyderabad went down to Zhao Jun of China in the tie-break when he lost the fourth game after the third one was a draw. Harikrishna was the higher rated and it is a surprise result.

G.N.Gopal lost 2-4 to Kasimdzhanov after the classical chess ended in 1-1, rapid in 1-1 and the second semi-rapid in the Uzbek player's favour 0-2. Gopal who became a GM last week will be adding Elo and returns a brave loser.

Bronze medal winner in the recent Asian championship at Cebu City, Kunte lost 1.5-2.5 to Vadim Zviaginsev of Russia.

In one of the upsets which could be of interest to Indians, Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh upset high rated GM Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine 1.5-0.5 without requiring the tie-breaks.
