Sethuraman Becomes Youngest Champion

The new champions are certainly getting younger. Fourteen year old
S.P.Sethuraman of Chennai became the youngest player ever to win the Tamil
Nadu state chess title. He achieved this feat on May 30 by scoring 9/11 to
win the title on better tie-break score. He won the 55th edition which was
FIDE rated and also took home Rs.30,000 in cash. It was sponsored and
staged at the Kodai Institute of Technology in Machur, Kodaikanal. It was
organised by the Mount Chess Academy in Chennai and the Indian Chess
School of Dindigul on behalf of the TNSCA. The total prize fund was Rs.1
lakh.
Sethuraman has also made enough to become an IM already. He drew Ram S
Krishnan, also of Chennai in the final round with white to win the
tournament. D.V.Sundar, Honorary Secretary, All India Chess Federation,
distributed the prizes in the presence of Dr Bh.Krishna Rao, Principal,
Kodai Institute of Technology and Rm. N.Karuppaiah, Vice President, Tamil
Nadu State Chess Association.
R.Arun Karthik scored a final round victory over M.D.Scanny to tie for the
first place and take the second position. The top four players will
represent Tamil Nadu in the National B which is fast coming up in the same
Dindigul district at the district headquarters, Dindigul itself from June
10-20.
Final placings: 1-2 S.P.Sethuraman (Chn), R.Arun Karthik (Chn) 9/11 each,
3-9 Ram S Krishnan (BSNL), S.Nitin (Slm), G.B.Prakash (IB), R.Premnath (Kanchi),
P.Phoobalan (Cbe), P.Saravanakrishnan (Kanchi), P.Shyam Nikhil (Mdu) 8.5
each, 10 M.Shyam Sundar (Chn) 8...243 players.
