Eesha,
Adhiban Make IM Norms
By Arvind Aaron
Woman Grand Master Eesha Karavade of Pune made her final International
Master norm to become our fourth women to qualify for the IM title in the
9th Dubai Open held at Dubai from April 22-30. B.Adhiban of Chennai,
trained by International Master T.S.Ravi made his second IM norm in the
same event. He had earlier made his first norm at the Parsvnath Open at
Delhi this year. Both Eesha and Adhiban scored 5.5/9.
Eesha scored 5.5 points to obtain the nine game norm and also become the
best performer among women who are non-GMs. GMs Humpy, Maya Chiburdanidze
of Georgia and Zhu Chen finished ahead of her with six points but formed
part of the regular prize list.
Levan Pantsulaia of Georgia won the tournament with 7/9 after he tied for
the first place witth Gadir Guseinov (Aze), Amir Bagheri (Iri) and Sarhan
Guliev (Aze) on the same points.
India's best performer in the tournament was P.D.S.Girinath of South
Central Railway, Hyderabad. He was in line for a GM norm but lost the last
round to GM Guseinov. Yet, for a player with 2378 Elo, his rating
performance was 2508! Vikramaditya Kamble of Western Railway also had a
good rating performance (2446) and finished in the main prize list.
Eleventh seed Humpy finished seventeenth and top seed Estonian GM Jaan
Ehlvest (now USA) finished 19th.
A total of 126 players including 25 GMs from 24 players took part in this
event which had a prize fund of $45,000. Casto P.Abundo of the Philippines
