Title For Prathamesh Mokal

International Master Prathamesh Mokal of Pune won the 45th PSNA
College of Engineering and Technology National B Chess Championship that
concluded at Dindigul on June 20.
Five
players, Mokal (Mah), M.R.Venkatesh, Sundararajan Kidambi
(both PSPB),
B.Adhiban (TN) and K.Ratnakaran (Rly) moved into lead with 8/10 and then
drew their last three games to tie for the first place.
Mokal had the higher tie-break as he had darted to sole lead with 7/7
earlier. Mokal received the trophy and Rs.30,000 first prize. B.Adhiban, a
14-year old Chennai schoolboy finished second and received Rs.23,000.
K.Ratnakaran, a railway ticket collector from Kozhikode stood third while
Chennai players M.R.Venkatesh and Kidambi took the fourth-fifth places.
All of them scored 9.5/13.
The event had its fair share of surprises. Eleven of the 30 qualifiers
were new entrants to the big league. The youngest qualifier is Ch. Mehar
Chinna Reddy who is 1995-born. WGM Nisha Mohota of Oil India, Kolkata was
the only lady qualifier this time. She started and ended well.
Among the top finishers, Vidit Gujarathi of Nasik is gaining most of
the Elo from the tournament. He is 1994-born and the second youngest among
the qualifiers. Among the notable players,
D.P.Singh failed to qualify and would be losing the most Elo points. He
joined Southern Railway recently. Also, top seed IM Abhijeet Gupta did not
make the grade. Among the other new qualifiers were Akshat
Khamparia (MP), M.R.Lalith Babu (AP), Preetham Sharma (Rly),
Shashikant Kutwal (Rly), S.P.Sethuraman, Arun Karthik and National
Sub-Junior champion Ashwath, all from Chennai.
The event went on smoothly from June 11-20 and the top 30 players will
advance to play in the next National A which should happen near Chennai
this November.

The chief arbiter was K.R.Seshadri of Chennai. Mount Chess Academy and
Indian Chess School did the show on behalf of the TNSCA.
