National Junior Girls Champion Soumya Swaminathan of Pune excelled in round six by shocking IM Tatiana Kononenko with the white pieces to keep herself in line with WIM and WGM norms. 

National Junior champion IM Abhijeet Gupta of PSPB held GM Julen Arizmendi with the black pieces to slip from joint lead to joint second place on 5/6. Six Seed IM Flores Diego swung into sole lead with 5.5 points. Four rounds remain to be played in the 12th Balaguer International Open Tournament in Spain on July 21. The GM aspirant B Adhiban and IM aspirant Arun Karthik suffered reverses with the white pieces against grand master opponents, Manuel Lopez and Levan Aroshidze.

Soumya Swaminathan is tied for the eighth to 19th places with 4.5 points. Abhijeet Gupta is tied for the second to seventh places. Indians are competing in these events at Spain for over ten years now.
