Six Indians Among Leaders

National Junior Girls Champion Soumya Swaminathan of Pune  shocked  new     IM B.Adhiban of Chennai in round two to be among the six Indians who are in lead after two rounds at Balaguer, Spain. Overall, 25 players are leading the Euro 12,475 Prize money tournament at Balaguer.

The 12th Balaguer Tournament has a first prize of Euro 2,000 (Rs.1,10,000) and has attracted 125 players. Balaguer is on the west-north-west side of Barcelona City and in the same Catalan state.

Those wanting to catch up with the Indians and track their results should visit www.openbalaguer.org  and the event runs from July 16-25. The third round is slated for Wednesday evening Spanish time. Eight rounds remain to be played.

Among the leaders are Ashwin Jayaram (Chennai), Abhijeet Gupta (Rajasthan), D.K.Sharma (Kanpur), Arun Karthik (Chennai) and Abhishek Das (Bank Sports Board) besides Soumya Swaminathan. While some are looking for IM norms, the IMs are looking for GM norms here. Scores of Indians have achieved their GM and IM norms from this venue which is three hours drive from Barcelona.
