Abhijeet Gupta Holds Delchev

National Junior champion Abhijeet Gupta, seed No.13 held second seed GM Alexander Delchev to a creditable draw with the black pieces and slipped from joint second place to joint third place at the end of the seventh round in the 12th Balaguer International Open at Spain on July 22.

International Master Vinay Bhat of United States joined IM Diego Flores in the lead with six points from seven rounds. Gupta fought hard and long to make a 72-move draw against Delchev. He is tied for the third to eighth places.

Chennai's B Adhiban and Ashwin Jayaram scored with black against lower rated FM Jose Ramon and Abhishek Das. Sahaj Grover held IM Dinesh Sharma to a draw with the white pieces. Arun Karthik held
higher rated IM Herman Van Riemsdijk to a draw with black. Soumya Swaminathan suffered a defeat to German GM Thomas Luther with the black pieces.

Overall, round seven was not a pleasant day for the 13 Indians as four of them won, and an equal number played draws while five players lost.
