A huge piece of luck helped IM Abhijeet Gupta of Petroleum Sports Board, Rajasthan to defeat B.Adhiban of Chennai in the ninth and penultimate round of the 12th Balaguer International Open on July 24.

Just with one round left, Abhijeet Gupta is on seven points from nine games and is tied for the second to fifth places.

A careless 35th move cost Adhiban his rook on the seventh rank. Adhiban was an exchange up and also having the attack when he captured a pawn and lost his rook. Gupta checkmated Adhiban on the 49th turn.

IM Logman Guliev, seed No.16 was defeated by seed No.26 Ashwin Jayaram in a nice rook and opposite colour bishop ending. GM Oleg Korneev defeated IM D.K.Sharma.

Arun Karthik continued to impress defeating GM Marc Narciso with the black pieces to reach six points.
