Eljanov Beats Harikrishna For Lead

Higher rated Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine overcame India's P Harikrishna for a place in the lead at the end of the fourth round in the 8th Montreal International Chess Tournament on July 22. Eljanov leads jointly leads on 3/4 with Gata Kamsky and Vassily Ivanchuk.

Eljanov gradually outplayed Harikrishna in a Slav defence game with the white pieces. Harikrishna sacrificed a pawn but he had to give up a bishop when his rook was attacked. Here, on the 38th move, he gave up.

Ivanchuk handed Short his fourth straight defeat. Ivanchuk is the player in form having won a string of events and should be favourite now. He is the World No.4 and top seed here. He comes from Lvov in Ukraine. New York's Kamsky, beat the other overnight leader Sergey Tiviakov of Groningen to be part of the leaders.
