Laxman Pockets Rs.50,000 Cash

By Arvind Aaron

International Master Rajaram Laxman of Chennai won the strong Bengal Peerless FIDE Rating Tournament that concluded at the Gorky Sadan in Kolkata on January 11. He scored 8.5/11 to win the tournament defeating the top seed GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh in the final round on January 11. With three players over 2500 rating it was one of the strongest rating tournaments of India.

Laxman had earlier won events in Sri Lanka and our own National Under-25 Championship. Winning a rating event of this strengt has clearly delighted the Chennai big boy who spends more time playing online chess and coaching if he himself is not at the board. The prize list was dominated by Indian and Bangladeshi players. IM Abdulla Al-Rakib (Ban) finished second on 8 points and was the only undefeated player. He took home Rs.30,000.

The top 30 players received cash prizes. Chairman of the left front Bimal Bose gave away the trophy in the closing ceremony which was attended by a galaxy of VIPs like Muhammad Imran (Bangladesh Deputy High commissioner), Kshiti Goswami (PWD Minister, West Bengal Government), Kumar Shankar Bagchi (MD, Bengal Peerless HDC Ltd) among others.

Former West Bengal champion Swapan Mitra (2162) was the surprise of the event. He tied for the second to eighth places with eight points.
