Chennai, Kozhikode Book
Ticket To Iran
By Arvind Aaron
Chennai-A won the 10th National Cities Championship with a big 3.5-0.5 win
in the final round over Bangalore-B. They totalled 23.5 points and the
that left Chennai-B a big task of scoring 4-0 to play catch up. The
Kozhikode team with Ratnakaran, O.T.Anil Kumar, E.P.Nirmal and P.Sreekumar
blanked Kanchi-B 4-0 to take the second place on 23 points. Chennai-B had
4-0 in mind and also got good positions but missed and only managed 3-1
against strong Ahmedabad to settle for the third place.
he best player for Chennai-A
was Ram S Krishnan. All his team mates, R.R.Laxman, M.Vinoth Kumar, C.Praveen Kumar played well but IM
R.Balasubramaniam's poor score was well compensated. Both Chennai-A and
Kozhikode scored 7/8 in the last two rounds and this is what matters in
team competitions. The prize distribution ceremony was nicely done with
crisp, informative speeches by D.V.Sundar, Secretary, AICF and Bharat
Singh Chauhan, Treasurer, AICF. In his vote of thanks, A.L.Kasi thanked
the sponsors, Shipping Corporation of India, The Hindu and other sponsors
for making the show pssible.
G.A.Rajkumar, Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu said we have to
see how we compare to those of other states and try to improve. He spoke
in Tamil and then switched over to English before giving away the cash
prizes totalling Rs.70,000 and the trophy to Chennai-A. D.V.Sundar said
Secretaries to Government functioned inside office rooms but G.A.Rajkumar
was different and he came to watch the sport and see the pulse of the
players, the spectators and the organisers often. He also thanked the
T.Nagar Chess Academy for organising this event well at short notice.
