Chennai, Kozhikode Book Ticket To Iran

Chennai-A won the 10th National Cities Championship with a big 3.5-0.5 win in the final round over Bangalore-B. They totalled 23.5 points and the that left Chennai-B a big task of scoring 4-0 to play catch up. The Kozhikode team with Ratnakaran, O.T.Anil Kumar, E.P.Nirmal and P.Sreekumar blanked Kanchi-B 4-0 to take the second place on 23 points. Chennai-B had 4-0 in mind and also got good positions but missed and only managed 3-1 against strong Ahmedabad to settle for the third place.
 

he best player for Chennai-A was Ram S Krishnan. All his team mates, R.R.Laxman, M.Vinoth Kumar, C.Praveen Kumar played well but IM R.Balasubramaniam's poor score was well compensated. Both Chennai-A and Kozhikode scored 7/8 in the last two rounds and this is what matters in team competitions. The prize distribution ceremony was nicely done with crisp, informative speeches by D.V.Sundar, Secretary, AICF and Bharat Singh Chauhan, Treasurer, AICF. In his vote of thanks, A.L.Kasi thanked the sponsors, Shipping Corporation of India, The Hindu and other sponsors for making the show pssible.

G.A.Rajkumar, Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu said we have to see how we compare to those of other states and try to improve. He spoke in Tamil and then switched over to English before giving away the cash prizes totalling Rs.70,000 and the trophy to Chennai-A. D.V.Sundar said Secretaries to Government functioned inside office rooms but G.A.Rajkumar was different and he came to watch the sport and see the pulse of the players, the spectators and the organisers often. He also thanked the T.Nagar Chess Academy for organising this event well at short notice.
 

Kozhikode Team

Bharat Singh distributed the special prizes and called Chennai as the capital of Indian chess. He recollected the big steps taken by AICF in the last years were only under D.V.Sundar. And he said the Government sending the Junior team to overseas competitions was a new big development for chess growth. Also he reminded the public that the Indian Olympiad team had a corporate sponsor (Canara Bank) and the team was given Rs.10 lakhs.

The top placings: 1 Chennai-A 23.5/32, 2 Kozhikode 23, 3 Chennai-B 22.5, 4 Hyderabad 21.5, 5 Kanchipuram-A 21...27 teams.Board prizes:  1 G.B.Prakash (Indian Bank, Chennai-B) 7/8, 2 O.T.Anilkumar (Kozhikode) 6/8, 3 R.Janakiraman (BSNL, Chennai-D) 6/8, 4 A.Sankar (Rly, Kanchipuram-A) 6.5/7, 5 Ram S.Krishnan (BSNL, Chennai-A) 6/6.

Important results (round 8): Chennai-A (23.5) bt Bangalore-B (18) 3.5-0.5, Ahmedabad (16.5) lost to Chennai-B (22.5) 1-3, Kozhikode (23) bt Kanchipuram-B (15.5) 4-0, Hyderabad (21.5) bt Trivallur (16) 3.5-0.5, Kanchipuram-A (21) bt Mangalore-A (16) 3-1.
