Commonwealth Chess Championship - Reports

Having played
two grueling rounds on the 1st day and, with double rounds also scheduled
on the 3rd day tomorrow, the top Grandmasters decided to play safe in the
3rd round of the Parsvnath Commonwealth Chess Championship 2007 held today
at Sirifort Sports Auditorium.
On the top board GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, playing Black, took a short draw
with Akshat Khamparia in just 18 moves from the game arising out of tthe
Benko Gambit Opening.
GM Parimarjan Negi could also not break the stubborn defense of IM
Chandrasekhar Gokhale and had to be content with a draw in 24 moves of the
Phildor’s Defense on the 2nd board.
On the 3rd board experienced Indian, Thejkumar had no difficulties in
holding GM Al-Rakib of Bangladesh. The players signed peace treaty in 28
moves from the game arising out of the Modern Benoni Defense.
The 4th board game between another Bangladesh GM, Reefat Bin Sattar and
WGM Eesha Karavade also proved to be a dull affair with players calling it
truce in 30 moves in the Closed Sicilian.
One of the top Indian women player, IM Harika also took short draw with
highly talented 15-year old, M.R. Lalith Babu in the English Opening.
The first decisive result came on the 6th board when IM elect, 17-year old
Ashwin Jayaram beat Rahul Sangma in just 21 moves of the Queens Indian
Defense. The win has propelled Ashwin in the lead with full score of 3
points. He has been joined in the lead by 5-players; GM R.B. Ramesh, IM
Rathnakaran, IM S.Arun Prasad, IM Himanshu Sharma and IM Mahmood Lodhi of
Pakistan who have scored wins over their rivals.
