The impact of
lower rated players in making the life tough for the higher ranked
Grandmasters continued in the 2nd round of the Parsvnath Commonwealth
Chess Championship 2007 in progress here at Sirifort Sports Auditorium as
6 Grandmasters could not make any headway and had to settle for a draw.
Seconded seeded GM Gawain Jones of England was held to a draw by the
Praveen Kumar from India from the black side of the English opening in
just 28 moves while the 3rd seeded experienced Indian GM Abhijit Kunte was
held by young Vinay Kumar Matta. One of the highly experienced Indian
Grandmasters and a veteran of many tough battles, Dibyendu Barua was
struggling against the young Swapnil Dhopade but managed to draw in the
game in the opposite colour endings. GM Pravin Thipsay was also held at a
draw by IM Sekhar Sahu, Bangladeshi GM, Niaz Murhsed by T. Abhay and
Deepan Chakravarthy by Kiran Mohanty.
On the top board GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly was also made to sweat by Nassir
wajih in the Sicilian Defense opening. After the exchange of queens &
minor pieces Ganguly emerged with an extra pawn in the rook endings
however; it appeared that this would be insufficient as the pawns were on
the same side but Nassir played incorrectly to lose the full point on the
49th move. On the 4th board GM Parimarjan Negi won against L Imocha but
only after a hard struggle in 49 moves from the Catalan Opening.
Ganguly now moves into the round 3 with another 46 players with full score
of 2 points, which also include 10-year old, Vaibhav Suri who continued
his dream run by beating Saurabh Kheredekar. A big pack of 44 players
follows the leader with a score of 1½ points.
Amongst the women players, IM Harika, WGMs Tania Sachdev, Swati Ghate and
Eesha Karavade scored victories while Nisha Mohota was held to a draw.
The major upsets of the round was the loss of IM Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury,
IM R.R. Laxman & IM Dinesh Kumar Sharma against their respective rivals,
Padmini Rout, Hemant Sharma and V.A.V. Rajesh
