By Arvind Aaron

Abhijeet Gupta, a three-time National Junior Champion from Bhilwara, in Rajasthan completed the GM formality by getting the 2500 rating mark in the Commonwealth Championship today as he became
India's 17th grandmaster. He represents Bharat Petroleum Corporation of India.

The unique thing about him and G.N.Gopal who also became a GM recently is that they dont live in a big city like the others in the Indian GM-club. Our other GMs live in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Vijaywada, Madurai.

Ahbijeet who had won plenty of Indian FIDE Rating events in 2007 completed his final GM norm at Balaguer in Spain with a 7.5/10 score on July 25 this year. He had made his previous GM norms at Andorra 2006 and Delhi 2007. He was required to complete the 2500 rating which he achieved on December 9, 2007.

Abhijeet works with IM Vishal Sareen of Delhi and had worked with many including GM Sherbakov and GM Deepan Chakkaravarthy. This boy speaks Hindi, English, Bengali and a bit of Marathi. Abhijeet is a Shahrukh Khan fan and sees plenty of Hindi films. He wants to become World No.1 and works 5-7 hours a day on chess.
