PARSVNATH 21ST NATIONAL
UNDER-13 CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
VIDIT IN SOLE LEAD
New Delhi (20/12/2007): Thursday, being the last day on which two
rounds were to be played, saw the top seed Vidit Santosh Gujarathi moving
closer towards defending his title at the ongoing Parsvnath National
Under-13 Chess Championship. In the eighth round, Vidit found himself
pitted against the overnight joint leader Gahan M G of Karntaka at the top
table. Heading into the game with Black pieces, Vidit opted to play the
Sicilian Defence and playing like a champion, defeated his lesser known
opponent in 47 moves.
Vidit is being closely followed by P Lokesh of Tamilnadu and Ankit R
Rajpara of Gujarat who are just half a point adrift of him. Ankit R
Rajpara of Gujarat overcame his rival Vishwanath Prasad of Andhra Pradesh
without much of a struggle. His game at the second board lasted just 24
moves. On the other hand, P Lokesh defeated Sayantan Das of West Bengal in
a long drawn out battle lasting 87 moves. A pack of four players,
consisting of Prasanna Rao of Maharashtra, Girish A Koushik of Karnataka,
Gahan M G of Karnataka and Pranav Shetty of Maharashtra each having 6.5
points , is snapping closely at the heels of the leaders.
The eighth round proved to be another difficult outing for the local Delhi
lads, as Commonwealth Gold medallist Vaibhav Suri had to settle for a draw
with Fenil Shah of Gujarat, while Prince Bajaj could not shake off his
poor form as he slumped to a defeat at the hands of Pranav Shetty of
Mahrashtra. In an interesting turn of events, visually challenged Darpan
Inani of Gujarat who has showed impressive talent throughout the
tournament, defeated FIDE rated player Ittayara Paul Vadassery of Kerala.
Darpan has now five points out of the possible eight.
