PARSVNATH 21ST NATIONAL
UNDER-13 CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
TOP SEEDS MADE TO STRUGGLE
New Delhi (17/12/2007): The battle on the checkered board got intensified
here at the ongoing Parsvnath 21st National Under-13 Chess Championship as
four of the top six boards ended without a decisive result.
At the top board, top seed Vidit Santosh Gujarathi was held off to a draw
by Andhra lad Vishawanth Prasad. Playing the Nimzo Indian Defence with
white pieces, Vidit tried very hard to break the defenses of Vishwanath.
But Vishwanath, who is rated 300 points below Vidit, proved to be a hard
nut to crack. With no way of forcing a result, the two players decided to
sign the peace treaty after playing just 17 moves.
The second board also delivered the same result. In a game where Scotch
game was employed, the Asian under-12 bronze medalist and second seed
Prasanna Rao, playing with black pieces, offered a draw in the 28th move
after failing to spot a winning continuation. The offer was gleefully
accepted by his lower rated opponent Gahan M G of Karnatka and both
players ended up sharing the point.
However other seeds had much easier games. Ankit R Rajpara of Gujarat
overcame fourth round hero Tejas Ravichandran of Tamilnadu and Pranav
Shetty defeated his Maharashtra state mate Patil Pratik without much
struggle.
But it was a mixed day for the host as the local favorite Commonwealth
Gold medalist Vaibhav Suri was humbled by Girish A Koushik of Karnataka.
On the other hand World Under-10 bronze medalist Prince Bajaj come back
strongly after two draws and earned himself a full point by defeating
Eshwanth Dev Kumar of Tamilnadu.
