Chess King Anand Thanks The AICF
By Arvind Aaron

The New World No.1 ranked player Viswanathan Anand called the AICF Secretary D.V.Sundar and thanked him personally for the efforts of the All India Chess

Federation which led FIDE to include the Morelia/Linares Chess Tournament in the April ratings after it had initially been excluded.

Sushila Viswanathan, Anand's mother who taught him the moves when he was six also called the All India Chess Federation. She also commended the AICF for the
promptness with which the AICF brought it to the notice of FIDE. "Had it been two days late they might not have corrected in this list," she told AICF  Secretary D.V.Sundar.

Aruna Anand, wife of the world rapid champion Viswanathan Anand also called D.V.Sundar and thanked the All India Chess Federation and said the AICF is very close to the chess players in this regime. Many would remember that in the Prague Agreement of 2002, Anand's interest was overlooked by the AICF of that
time. Also on March 31, 2007 when Anand knew that FIDE had not rated Morelia/Linares, he showed resilience and won his German League game against Luke  McShane to help his club Baden Baden to a title triumph.

"When we look back, these unjust years turned out to be his best years, 1998, 2002, and now" said Aruna Anand. From December first week Anand slogged his way  to the finals from Geoningen in 1997 while Karpov was waiting for him in Lausanne for the 1998 match. The whole of 1998 went very well for Anand and won most  of the events including Linares for the first time. When the Prague Agreement was made in 2002, it became clear that Anand had to wait next five years to play for the world title. He won that Prague Tournament ahead of the best players there.

However, the AICF fought for inclusion of this premier Morelia/Linares event and did not allow injustice to our player this time. FIDE had published the April 2007 ratings on March 31, 2007. Though March 31, 2007 was a bandh in Chennai, and the AICF Office had a holiday on account of that, D.V.Sundar fought for the inclusion of Morelia/Linares event and FIDE was brought under tremendous pressure before they decided to rate Linares on April 1.
