Sai Meera In Joint Lead
By Arvind Aaron, Press Officer - AICF
Posting two brilliant victories, Sai Meera Ravi of
Indian Bank, Chennai joined Lakshmi Sahithi in the lead in the 33rd St
Joseph's National Women B Chess Championship on Sep 23. Both players have
six points from seven rounds.
In the third to fifth places with 5.5 points are R.Preethi and R.Mahima of
Madurai, Nimmy George of Aluva, Kerala. The dominance of Tamil Nadu
players is continuing and three of its players, P.Priya, R.Preethi and
N.Raghavi are undefeated so far. The event selects 20 players to the
National Women A.
Both of Saturday's rounds revealed that the sole leaders are unable to
hold on to the top position. In the seventh round, Sai Meera blocked the
opening idea of Nimmy George brilliantly to win with a rook for knight
sacrifice. In the earlier round, Nimmy George had defeated overnight
leader Lakshmi Sahithi in style to wrest sole lead with 5.5/6. Nimmy won a
rook after chasing the black king all over the board. Leaders are unable
to hold on. Many of the draws were fighting and some were more than 100
moves.
The round seven Preethi v Sanggeetha game was a see-saw affair with the
latter having a big advantage. However she blundered a bishop in the
ending and Preethi called the shots towards the end when the rook+knight
versus rook ending without pawns was drawn. The handicapped Jennitha Anto
impressed by holding two strong players, Raghavi and Asian Under-12
champion Padmini Rout to draws. Jennitha is well placed in joint sixth
place with five points from seven rounds. Four round are still to go.
