Expect New, Younger Qualifiers
By Arvind Aaron, Press Officer - AICF
Younger champions in the Asian and Indian age-group are expected to have
their say in the 33rd National Women B Championship that starts at the St
Joseph's College of Engineering in south Chennai from Sep 19.
The 105-entry 11-round Swiss will be played from Sep 19-26 for a prize
fund of Rs.75,000. The National B is for players who are not in the top
six and are not Woman Grand Masters yet. The top 20 players will qualify
for the National Women A. Last year, only ten qualified from the Sangli
National B. Now the National A is made into a Swiss format and more
entries could be accommodated from the National B. This 8-day show is
organised by Mount Chess Academy, Chennai and sponsored by St Joseph's
College of Engineering.
Soumya Swaminathan of Pune, the National Junior Girls Champion of 2005 and
2006 is the favourite to win this event together with her Maharashtra
team-mate Amruta Mokal.
Tamil Nadu has naturally fielded most of the entries being hosts. They are
followed by Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Sixty of the 105 entries are
FIDE rated players. V.Ravichandran and K.R.Seshadri are the arbiters.
The qualifying numbers being doubled from 10 to twenty should help some of
the players breathe easy and make it to the next stage. Expect new and
younger players to make it like Lakshmi Sahiti, Bhakti Kulkarni etc.
