Dusthageer Ibrahim Wins SPIC FIDE Rated
By Arvind Aaron
The SPIC FIDE Rated Open held in September-October at Tuticorin in Tamil
Nadu attracted a record 176 entries. A big surprise was waiting to happen
as D.P.Singh was defeated in the very first round by an unknown chess
trainer of the Emmanuel Chess Center run by FIDE Trainer Ebenezer Joseph
at Chennai.
When the event progressed further more exciting things happened as a
15-year old Madurai schoolboy Dusthageer Ibrahim defeated favourite
Diwakar Prasad Singh to win the title with nine points on tie-break.
D.P.Singh managed to play catch up with the boy but was placed second on
tie-break. Youngsters are making a mark in this event. So much to say,
last year S.Nitin another school boy (then 13-years) from Salem won it.
After the fall of the Mappillai Vinayagar Tournament in Madurai, this is
now the most important chess tournament in the south of Tamil Nadu.
M.Ephrame of Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu was the Chief Arbiter.
