Vidya Sagar Fundraiser - Siddharth, Victor Hold Anand
Anand Wins 30, Draws 2 For A 31/32 Score
By Arvind Aaron
The Vidya Sagar Fund raiser held on Oct 8 saw Viswanathan Anand fulfil the
dreams of many at the GRT Convention Centre at Chennai as he gave a
32-player simultaneous display winning 30 and drawing two. Anand is a
brand amassador for Vidya Sagar since 2003 and has been raising funds for
this south based organisation on a regular basis. "Vidya Sagar is close to
my heart," said Anand. Vidya Sagar chief said, "Anand is an ally of people
with disability." Players from Chennai, Pondicherry, Bangalore
and Coimbatore were among the participants. Two players, S.Siddharth, a
seventh standard school student from Chettinad Vidyashram, Chennai and
K.A.D.Victor a 45-year old Chennai based FIDE rated player held Anand to
draws. "They played well, especially the older man," said Anand. "It was
an unforgetable day, I had previously seen Anand in one closing ceremony
of Indian Bank Open in Chennai," said Victor.
The event titled "Vishy versus Everybody" was held in two sessions of 16
games and Anand sported a Vidya Sagar T-shirt as he walked through the
four rows of boards. The chess fraternity of Chennai was busy on this
weekend with over 500 players engaged in the tournament organised by the
Bloom Chess Academy and also with a TNSCA Meeting.
The Rs.6,000 entry fee package included being closeted with the living
legend in the same hall for five hours, a game with him and food with
drinks for an accompanying person. The kind genius posed for pictures
between the simultaneous and also gave press interviews. "This (July 19
2005 was a bigger show) time it was relaxed," Anand told his wife
Aruna after the show.
Media, press were in full attendance, and guests included Anand's parents.
The show was done by Kuri
Abraham, Anand's manager. Many would remember this venue as the same place
in which IM V.Saravanan had his wedding reception.
