CPAI Event
From Monday At Pune

The CPAI (Chess
Players Association of India) is organizing a big rapid chess tournament
from Oct 30 to Nov 5 at the Poona Club in Pune. The prize fund is Rs.5
lakhs. The cream of Indian chess minus the trio of V.Anand, K.Sasikiran
and P.Harikrishna will be in action in the 64-player knock out rapid chess
tournament. The CPAI is doing it together with the Buddhibal Kreeda Trust,
Pune.
CPAI is making elaborate efforts to popularise the event and one can see
the details on its sitewww.cpai.in for greater and updated details.
The winner will take home Rs.1 lakh and the top two seeds are GMs Surya
Sekhar Ganguly of Kolkata and Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Madurai. Plenty of
players are given direct seeding and the CPAI also had blitz qualifiers to
select players for this rapid chess event!
Some of the grandmasters who are making a comeback after longer rest are
Dibyendu Barua the President of the CPAI and Pravin Thipsay. Diwakar
Prasad Singh who had been winning most of the Swiss events held in India
will be in action.
Prominent among the stars of the event will be Grandmasters Surya Sekhar
Ganguly (Arjuna Awardee and National Champion for the last 3 years),
Pravin Thipsay (Arjuna / Chatrapathi Awardee and former 7 times National
Champion), Dibyendu Barua (Arjuna Awardee and former National Champion),
and the pride of Pune, Abhijit Kunte (Former National Champion and British
Champion). They can expect their challenge to come from young GMs Deepan
Chakravarthy, R.B.Ramesh and Tejas Bakre. They will be joined by seasoned
campaigners WGMs Swati Ghate (reigning National Women Champion), Nisha
Mohota (former National Women Champion) and Meenakshi Subbaraman, IMs
Varughese Koshy, Lanka Ravi (National B Champion), Sudhakar Babu and
Sharad Tilak, and currently the biggest sensation in the Indian Open
Tournament Circuit Divakar Prasad Singh of Jharkhand. Stiff resistance is
expected from some of the brightest talents of the country, WGMs Tania
Sachdev and Eesha Karavade, IM Abhijeet Gupta (current National Junior
Champion), IWM Kruttika Nadig, and the current National Junior Girls
Champion Soumya Swaminathan. All in all, the Poona Club Knockout Rapid
Chess Championship promises to be a gala event in the National Chess
scene.
