Indians Start Well, 26 Players Lead!

Except the Open Under-18 section, 26 Indians are sharing the lead in the other eleven sections of the
World Youth Chess Championship being played at Batumi in Georgia. The first two rounds were completed on October 20 and the third round is slated for October 21.

Five Indians boys are leading the Under-10 section and our presence is complete in the Under-12 section as well where four Indians are leading. Significantly, India had won these two sections at Belfort last year.  Overall, Indians have leaders in all the six girls sections where ten of our players are in front.
Sixteen boys including N.Srinath who is defending his Under-12 title are leading in the five Open sections. 


Girls Under-18: Two Indians, second seed Dronavalli Harika of Guntur and Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata are in the lead with two points out of two rounds. There are five others with them on the same points. There are in all 41 players in this section and WGM Diana Arutyunova (Ukr) is the top seed.

Girls Under-16: Seed 20 P.Uthra of Chennai is among the seven leaders with full two points in this section. Higher rated fourth seed I.Ramyakrishna is one 1.5 points. Dhyani Dave is on one point and Priyadarshini Varna is yet to open her account in this 54-player event.

Girls Under-14: In the 52-player Girls Under-14 championship, seed No.14 Chennai's Pon.N.Krithikha is in joint lead with two points from two games. She is among the seven leaders. Higher rated P.Lakshmi Sahithi and Bhakti Kulkarni are in the spot with 1.5 points and would be facing each other in round three.  Devangi Patankar (1.5) and Pallabi Roy (1) are the other Indians in the fray.

Girls Under-12: In the 67-player Girls under 12 section, two Indians, Asian Under-12 champion and top seed Padmini Rout of Orissa and J.Mohana Priya of Chennai are in the joint lead with full two points. There are nine more players with them on the same points. Other Indians: Sirisha Gutta (1.5).

Girls Under-10: Second seed Kotepalli Sai Nirupama and Bodda Pratyusha are leading this second with full two points after two rounds. Indian presence is heavy in this section as the top three seeds are Indians. Third seed Sahajasri of Karimnagar, G.Uma Bharathi and M.Priyadarshini are on 1.5 points. Top seed Nishtha Gupta, G.Aiswarya and Deepika Kuchipudi are on one point. There are 64 players.

Girls Under-8: In this 47-player event, ninth seed Ivana Furtado of Goa and 28 seed Mannepalli Navyavyshnavi are leading with full two points along with nine others. Third seed U.Shwini is on one point and faces Shoumi Mukherjee (1.5) in the third round.  Other Indian is M.Mahalakshmi on one point.

Open Under-18: There are 54 players in this section and India's G.Rohit (1.5/2) and S.Arun Prasad (1/2) are in this strong field which has GM Yuri Kuzubov of Ukraine as the top seed.

Open Under-16: Aswin Jayaram (seed 15) and S.P.Sethuraman (seed 13) of Chennai are among the nine leaders with two full points in the Under-16 championship. Vietnam's GM Nguyen Ngoc Truongson is the top seed and he has dropped half point already.


Other Indians: Dasari Sai Srinivas 1.5.

Open Under-14: Y.Sandeep (AP) is among the 13 leaders in the Under-14 championship with full two points. B.Adhiban of Chennai and K.Priyadarshan of Madurai are on 1.5 points. There are 81 players in the fray.

Open Under-12: Including the defending champion N.Srinath of Chennai, there are four Indians among the 13 leaders in this Under 12 section. Other three Indians on two points are V.A.V.Rajesh (schooling in Chennai), Fenil Shah, Adith Jagadish. Last years World Under-10 champion Sahaj Grover is also in this section and he is on 1.5 points. On the same 1.5 points are: Vidit Santosh Gujarathi, Sri Harsha Lingala, Vishwanath Prasad. There are many more Indians in this 91-player section.

Open Under-10: Top seed Komiri Vijaya Kanth, National U-9 champion G.V.Sai Krishna, Girish Koushik, Shiven Khosla, Kharma H.Pandya are the five Indians who are jointly leading this section with seven others. There are many others from India in this 94-player section.

Open Under-8: Four Indians including the top seed M.Satvik are among the 16 leaders in this section with full two points. Other three leaders are: Ch Mohineesh, Soumya Sharma and G.Lohit. Tied for the second spot on 1.5 points are Bharat Arjun Roshik and Jarshavardhan Reddy. Third seed Prince Bajaj is on one point along with B.Kumaran. There are 80 players.
