Harika Moves
To Sole Lead
By Arvind Aaron
Dronavalli
Harika of Guntur moved to sole lead in the World Under-18 Girls
Championship. She is also one point ahead of rest in that field.
Interestingly, Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata is in second place in that
section.
Setting standards for others Indians to follow, Gogineni Rohit scored an
upset win in the morning session of October 23 to move to second place and
face leader GM Bassem Amin of Egypt in the World Under-18 championship at
Batumi.
After the morning session, five boys and four girls are in the lead in
seven sections. There is a second session on Monday and often this sets
the trend as six rounds remain to be played.
Open: Under-18: Gogineni Rohit shocked higher rated IM Krisztian Szabo of
Hungary with the white pieces in the fifth round to dart to second place
with four points. In the sixth round, Rohit will face sole leader GM
Bassem Amin of Egypt. S.Arun Prasad also won but against a lower rated
Swiss player to reach 3 points.
Open Under-16: Aswin Jayaram of Chennai beat a Greek player to share the
fourth place with four points from five rounds. Sai Srinivas lost to
remain on 3.5 points and S.P.Sethuraman drew a higher rated opponent to
reach 3 points.
Open Under-14: Our players are way behind in this section with B.Adhiban
on 3/5, Y.Sandeep and S.Nitin on 2.5 points from five rounds.
Open Under-12: Indians had a sweeping session with two of the three
leaders coming from India. N.Srinath and Fenil Shah are leading along with
one American on 4.5 points from five rounds. Indians are moving forward in
this section as six of our players occupy the top seven boards for the
sixth round slated for later this afternoon. Others include: Sahaj Grover,
Sri Harsha Lingala on four points, Adith Jagadish, Vishwanath Prasad and
V.A.V.Rajesh are on 3.5 points.
Open Under-10: This section looks like an Indian championship with seven
of the top ten players being
Indians. At the end of the fifth round, two players, G.V.Sai Krishna of
Vijayawada and Girish Koushik of Mysore are leading the tournament with
full five points. They meet each other on Monday afternoon to decide the
sole leader. When they faced at Chennai in the National Under-9
championship last June, Sai Krishna won the game and title.
In the clear second place is Y.V.K.Chakravarthy on 4.5. Three Indians are
tied for the fourth place with
four points: Abhilash Reddy, top seed Komiri Vijaya Kanth, Sayantas Das.
Besides them, R.Eswar and Shiven Khosla are not far behind on 3.5 points.
Open Under-8: Ch Mohineesh of Andhra Pradesh and Hu Zhengdong of China are
leading this section with full five points. Tied for the third place on
four points is Prince Bajaj, Bharat Arjun and others.
Girls Under-18: Former world under-14 champion Dronavalli Harika of Guntur
moved to sole lead from joint lead with a victory over lower rated Tatev
Abrahamyam of United States with the black pieces. Harika leads with
full five points and is one point ahead of the rest. Mary Ann Gomes shares
the second place with two others with four points. Harika had beaten all
the three players on four points that International Arbiter and two time
world championship women's challender Nana Alexandria had to pair a five
pointer (Harika) with a 3.5 pointer for the sixth round.
Girls Under-16: Indians had a mixed day with Uthra losing, Ramyakrishna
making a draw and Dhyani Dave winning. In the end, all these three players
are on 3 points each.
Girls Under-14: Lakshmi Sahithi and Bhakti Kulkarni posted victories in
the fifth round to take their tally to 3.5/5 where they share the sixth
place.
Girls Under-12: Top seed and Asian under-12 champion Padmini Rout was held
to a draw by seed 4 Diana Baciu of Moldova in the fifth round. This
allowed Mariam Danelia to beat J.Mohana Priya and join Rout and Baciu in
the lead on 4.5/5.
Girls Under-10: Bodda Pratyusha was unseated from the sole lead by Andhra
player Sai Nirupama in the fifth round. Along with Sai Nirupama, two
others are in the lead with 4.5/5.
Girls Under-8: Gomini Shreya is one of three leaders in this section after
she won with the white pieces to reach 4.5/5. However, other overnight
joint leader Navyavyshvili suffered a defeat with the black pieces to
remain on 3.5/5. Ivana Furtado accounted for Sweety Patel to reach four
points and tie for the fourth place.
