Girish Koushik Leads By Two Points

By Arvind Aaron

Girish Koushik of Mysore leads the World Under-10 Chess Championship by two full points after he won an eighth round game against second seed Irakli Beradze of Georgia, late on Wednesday evening at Batumi in Georgia. Three rounds remain to be played in the World Youth Chess Championship.

Girish won all his eight games so far. India is hoping for a sweep of the podium in this section. Six of the seven players who are tied for the second place behind Girish are from India. The Boys Under-10 section is India's pet section. India first won this section at Menorca 1996 when P.Harikrishna did it. Sahaj Grover won it last year at Belfort.

Ch. Mohineesh of Visakhapatnam and Ivana Furtado of Goa are leading the Open under-8 and Girls under-8 sections by slender half point margins. Overall, the eighth round was not pleasant for the Indians as we lost sole lead in the Girls Under-18 section and also the shared lead in the Open under-12 section.

Boys Group

Open Under-18: G.Rohit and S.Arun Prasad played a draw between them to move to five points and share the seventh place. They will have to win all their remaining three games to win a medal.

Open Under-16: Aswin Jayaram is tied for the twelfth place on five points. Sai Srinivas (4.5) and S.P.Sethuraman (4) are behind and have lost medal chances.

Open Under-14: B.Adhiban of Chennai played a draw with lower rated Federico Perez of Argentina to reach 5.5 points where he shares the eighth place.

Open Under-12: Defending champion N.Srinath slipped from joint lead to joint second place as he made a draw in Wednesday's evening round. Illya Nyzhnyk of Ukraine moved into sole lead with seven points from eight games.

Open Under-10: Girish Koushik won yet again to reach eight points from eight games and stretch his lead to two full points. Girish beat second seed Irakli Beradze of Georgia who is rated 90 Elo than him. In the second place on six points are seven players and six of them are from India: Sayantan Das, Komiri Vijaya Kanth, R.Eswar, G.V.Sai Krishna, Y.V.K.Chakravarthi, Abhilash Reddy. A further half point below on 5.5 are Mugil Jayavel and Shiven Khosla.

Open Under-8: Ch Mohineesh played a draw with the black pieces and this allowed his lead to reduce from one point to half point. He leads with 7.5 out of eight games. Prince Bajaj is tied for the third-fourth places in this section with 6.5 points.

Girls Group

Girls Under-18: India suffered a double blow when our players lost in the top two boards with the white pieces. Top seed WGM Diana Arutyunova of Ukraine beat Dronavalli Harika. This helped Nargiz Umudova of Azerbaijan to lead with 6.5 points. Second seed Harika's first defeat leaves her at joint second-third place with six points. Mary Ann Gomes who also lost is tied for the fourth to eighth places with 5.5 points.

Girls Under-16: Indians have lost the chance of a medal in this section with I.Ramya Krishna on 4.5/8 and others little behind.

Girls Under-14: India's best bet and seed four, Lakshmi Sahithi is tied for the fourth place with 5.5 points from eight games. Lakshmi has a freak chance to pull down the leader and top seed Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine as they meet in Thursday's round nine.

Girls Under-12: Padmini Rout won the evening round on Wednesday to move to joint second place with six points from eight games. Danelia Mariam (7.5/8) of Georgia leads this section by a 1.5-point margin. Padmini, Asian champion and top seed faces her on Thursday and should win to keep the title chances open.

Girls Under-10: India is back in business in this section after our National Under-9 champion Ch Sahajasri beat Zhai Mo of China with the black pieces to move to the joint second place on 6.5 points. Another Indian to share the second spot is Sai Nirupama who beat Shamatava Ana of Georgia. Filiz Osmanodja of Germany is leading this section with seven points.

Girls Under-8: Ivana Furtado won her fifth game in a row to keep her slender half point lead with seven points from eight games. In the second place is Mannepalli Navyavyshnavi with 6.5 points. Tied for the third-fourth place is Sweety Patel of Surat with 6 points. U.Ashwini and M.Mahalakshmi are tied for the fifth place with 5.5 points.
