Four Indians
In Sole Lead After Sixth Round

Ch Mohineesh
put it across a Chinese opponent to snatch sole lead in the Open Under-8
section of the World Youth Chess Festival on Monday evening. At the end of
the sixth round on Sep 23 evening, four Indiansare in sole lead and Ivana
Furtado is in joint lead in the Girls Under-8 section.
While Mohineesh (Under-8) and Girish Koushik(Under-10) lead by a full
point on 6/6, N.Srinath (Under-12) and Dronavalli Harika (Girls-18) are
ahead of the rest by half a point on 5.5/6. Ivana Furtado (Girls Under-8)
of Goa is sharing the lead with five
points after wresting it from another Indian, Gomini Shreya. Overall, five
Indians are in lead in the five of the 12 sections. India's dominance of
the event is complete with the Russians not participating for political
reasons.
Tuesday is a free day and the seventh round will be played on Wednesday
morning. There are five rounds still to be played.
Open Under-18: Gogineni Rohit went down to leader GM Bassem Amin of Egypt
to stay on four points. S.Arun Prasad of Salem won and joined him in the
seventh place on four points.
Open Under-16: Aswin Jayaram of Chennai who isstudying in Bangalore now
was defeated by joint leader IM Vladimir Onischuk of Ukraine in the second
session. He and S.P.Sethuraman are tied for the ninth place on four
points. Sai Srinivas is on 3.5.
Open Under-14: B.Adhiban of Chennai scored two victories on Monday to
shore up India's hopes in this section. He moved to 4/6 to share the 15th
place. Y.Sandeep is on 3.5 and Priyadarshan is on 3.
Open Under-12: N.Srinath of Chennai who is defending his world under-12
title got the better of team-mate Fenil Shah to snatch the sole lead with
5.5 points from six games. Srinath started as the twelfth seed as there
are eleven players rated higher than him in this section! Fenil Shah,
Adith Jagadish, Vishwanath Prasad are tied for the sixth place on 4.5
points. Vidit Gujrathi, Sahaj Grover and Sri Harsha Lingala are on
four points.
Open Under-10: Girish A.Koushik of Mysore avenged the defeat he suffered
in the nationals last year by defeating G.V.Sai Krishna to move into sole
lead with
six points out of six rounds. Tied for the second to fourth places on 5/6
are three Indians: top seed Komiri Vijaya Kanth, Sayantan Das and G.V.Sai
Krishna.
On 4.5 points are Shiven Khosla, Y.V.K.Chakravarthi and R.Eswar. They are
tied for the fifth to 13th places.
Open Under-8: Ch Mohineesh can be called the dark or brown horse. Starting
as the 55th seed he had now defeated Hu Zhengdong of China to snatch sole
lead with six points from six games. He also leads by a full one point.
Tied for the second place on five
points is Prince Bajaj.
Girls Under-18: Woman Grand Master Dronavalli Harika dropped half a point
when she held International Master Maka Purtseladze (Geo) to a draw in the
second session on Monday. Harika keeps the sole lead on 5.5/6 but the one
point lead has now been cut short to half a point as Mary Ann Gomes of
Kolkata posted a victory. Mary Ann shared the second-third place on five
points.
Girls Under-16: This section was the weakest for the Indians with Ramya
Krishna on 3.5, P.Uthra and Dhyani Dave on three each. The leaders are
only on five points and a strong finish for this trio can raise medal
hopes.
Girls Under-14: Asian Under-14 champion BhaktiKulkarni won a shared the
fourth place with 4.5 points. Other three Indians, P.Lakshmi Sahithi,
Pallabi Roy and Pon N.Krithikha are on 3.5 points. China's Yu Hualin leads
this section with 5.5/6.
Girls Under-12: Top seed and Asian Under-12 champion Padmini Rout of
Orissa slipped from the top and lost to WIM Moha Khaled of Egypt to share
the fifth place on 4.5 points. J.Mohana Priya is still behind on 3.5
points.
Girls Under-10: Joint leader Kotepalli Sai Nirupama played white and lost
to Dinara Saduakassova (5.5/6) of Kazakhstan in the sixth round to share
the fifth place with Ch Sahajasri on 4.5 points. Former leader of this
section B.Pratyusha and Deepika Kuchipudi are on four points. Top seed of
this section Nishtha Gupta and Uma Bharathi are on 3.5 points.
Girls Under-8: India continues to have one leg in the three-way lead.
Ivana Furtado beat Gomini Shreya and replaced her in the lead with 5/6.
Tied for the fourth place on 4.5 points are Gomini, Navyavyshnavi and
others. Sweety Patel is on 4 and U.Ashwini is on 3.5.
