By Arvind Aaron

Wild card entrant, Woman International Master Kruttika Nadig, a Bangalore based student shocked the National Women's Champion WGM Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune 1.5-0.5 to enter the second round in the Poona Club Knock Out Rapid Chess Tournament that began in Pune on October 30.

While most of the favourites had a smooth time into the second round, former Olympiad gold medal winner Dibyendu Barua beat youngster Abhishek Kelkar only in the tie-break after he suffered a shocking loss in the first rapid game. Barua won the second rapid game, levelled scores and then took the match 1-1, 2-0 in the tie-break to enter the second round.

The other player to make news was Chinmay Kulkarni who shocked Grand Master R.B.Ramesh of Indian Oil, Chennai in the second rapid game to level the scores and force the play off. Ramesh won the play off 2-0 but he had enough trouble in round one.

The top half of the draw were seen in action on Monday and the second half of the draw will happen on
Tuesday. The 5 lakh event is organised by the CPAI and Buddhibal Kreeda Trust of Pune at the Poona Club.

Eesha Karavade, Pune's woman grandmaster needed six long games to defeat Saurabh Kherdekar after she won 1-1, 1-1, 2-0 to make it to the second round. Kherdekar took the lead in the match when Karavade overstepped the time limit in a queen and pawn versus lone queen ending.

The new Monroi system of inputing moves were used.  This is yet to catch the fancy of the world but has been experimented in a select band of events and this was one of them.
