Tejas Bakre

Tejas Bakre Wins Poona Rapid
By Arvind Aaron Press Officer -  AICF

Tejas Bakre of Indian Airlines, Ahmedabad is in the news for his latest achievement at the Poona Club. It was his best since winning the World Youth title in 1998 at Moscow. After ceding a quick draw with the white pieces in 15 moves, Bakre latched on to a blunder to win a rook for bishop and the game. His victory margin over Surya Sekhar Ganguly of Indian Oil, Kolkata was 1.5-0.5.

Bakre was delighted and dedicated the victory to his parents. Bakre kept his nerve and waited for the mistakes. In fact it was he who made minor inaccuracies and gave Ganguly a big advantage until the Kolkata star fumbled under the pressure. Bakre won Rs.1 lakh and the CPAI organised event had a prize fund of Rs.5 lakhs.

Bakre won the toss and elected to play white in the first game. Normally a positive sign. However he took a draw and relied on the weakness of Ganguly to win the match. It requires a cool nerve to win such quickplay and knock out events. Bakre was more cool than his grandmaster peers.

The CPAI together with the Buddhibal Kreeda Trust organised the show and sponsorship came from Poona club, the venue. It was a 64-player knock out and many players benefited.
