Tejas Bakre
Enters Semifinals
By Arvind Aaron
Three Indian
Oil players, national champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly of Kolkata, Abhijit
Kunte of Pune,
R.B.Ramesh of Chennai along with Tejas Bakre of Indian
Airlines, Ahmedabad moved into the semifinals of the Poona Club Rapid
Chess Tournament organised by the CPAI and the Buddhibal Kreeda Trust in
Pune on November 2. The semifinals and upwards are now only grandmaster
affairs as Ganguly takes on Ramesh and Kunte plays Bakre.
Both these players are made of steel though only one of them represents
Tata Steel. Barua of of Tata Steel, Kolkata lost the exchange in the
middle of the first game with the black pieces but put up good resistance
to lose after missing a drawing chance in the long 87-move encounter.
Kunte, who rarely loses, required a draw with the black pieces in the
reverse game and got it with solid play.
In the longest match of the day, Bakre derailed Ratnakaran when he
accepted the piece sacrifice of the ambitious player from Kerala and win
in the second set of tie-break games. Ramesh beat Thipsay 2-0 with a
brilliant queen offer in the first and powerful play in the opening phase
of the game in the reverse encounter.
Ganguly overcame a fighting M.R.Venkatesh to ensure that only one player
from one city qualified for the semifinals. In the two rapid games,
Ganguly faced opening surprises but managed to draw. In the first set of
tie-break games, Ganguly took the lead with the Richter Rauser attack and
then repeated the position to take the match 1-1, 1.5-0.5.
The results (quarter finals): Surya S Ganguly bt M.R.Venkatesh 1-1,
1.5-0.5, Abhijit Kunte bt Dibyendu Barua 1.5-0.5, R.B.Ramesh by
P.M.Thipsay 2-0, Tejas Bakre bt K.Ratnakaran 1-1, 1-1, 1.5-0.5.
