After an eventful November 1, 2006, the quarter final line up was drawn.
The two surprise entrants were K.Ratnakaran, the railway ticket checker at
Kozhikode station and M.R.Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum, Chennai. Rest of
the six players are grandmasters. Ratnakaran shocked second seed GM Deepan
Chakkaravarthy of Madurai 1-1, 1.5-0.5 to set up a clash with GM Tejas
Bakre of Ahmedabad in the last eight.
National A champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly did not have an easy passage to
the quarter finals. The National B champion Lanka Ravi of ONGC, Hyderabad
stood firm and managed to keep the scores level until the Armageddon
tie-break had to be used after 1-1 (rapid), 1-1 (blitz), 1-1 (blitz). In
the second pair of blitz tie-break games, Ravi lost on time after having
taken the lead in the first game. Ganguly checkmated Ravi to face
M.R.Venkatesh in the quarter finals.
GM Pravin Thipsay of Union Bank of India, Mumbai suffered two defeats to
WGM Tania Sachdev but the veteran still had the last laugh winning 1-1,
1-1, 2-0 to face R.B.Ramesh in the quarter finals. The show is happening
at the Poona Club and is organised by the CPAI and the Buddhibal Kreeda
Trust, Pune.
