After an eventful November 1, 2006, the quarter final line up was drawn. The two surprise entrants were K.Ratnakaran, the railway ticket checker at Kozhikode station and M.R.Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum, Chennai. Rest of the six players are grandmasters. Ratnakaran shocked second seed GM Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Madurai 1-1, 1.5-0.5 to set up a clash with GM Tejas Bakre of Ahmedabad in the last eight.

National A champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly did not have an easy passage to the quarter finals. The National B champion Lanka Ravi of ONGC, Hyderabad stood firm and managed to keep the scores level until the Armageddon tie-break had to be used after 1-1 (rapid), 1-1 (blitz), 1-1 (blitz). In the second pair of blitz tie-break games, Ravi lost on time after having taken the lead in the first game. Ganguly checkmated Ravi to face M.R.Venkatesh in the quarter finals.

GM Pravin Thipsay of Union Bank of India, Mumbai suffered two defeats to WGM Tania Sachdev but the veteran still had the last laugh winning 1-1, 1-1, 2-0 to face R.B.Ramesh in the quarter finals. The show is happening at the Poona Club and is organised by the CPAI and the Buddhibal Kreeda Trust, Pune.
