Nationla Under - 7 Chess Championship @ Goa

The National U-7 Chess Championship for boys and girls started today at Don Bosco Oratory Hall, Panjim here today with 140 boys in the open section and 65 girls in the girls section. At the end of the first round 69 boys and 33 girls are in the joint lead with one point in their respective sections.

In the first round today under-8 world champion Ivana Furtado (1) of Goa scored her first point while top seed C. H. Megna (1) of Kerala beat Maithreai D (0) of Andhra Pradesh. Incidently Megna is the only FIDE rated player in this tournament and hence is seeded above world champion Ivana.

In the boys section Sai Akshay (1) of Andhra Pradesh beat Goa’s Girish Kulkarni (0) while Abhay P. Singh of Punjab lost to Orissa’s Rocky Kumar (1) on the top two boards.

Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by Executive  Director of Sports Authority of Goa Mr. V. M. Prabhudesai. In his speech Mr. Prabhudesai announced that the Government would be releasing a grant of Rupees 5 lakhs for the conduct of the tournament. He stated that the success of Ivana Furtado & Bhakti Kulkarni has created an enormous  chess wave in Goa and that parents should take advantage of the opportunities being offered through this intellectual game. Fr. Wilfred Fernandes Administrator of Don Bosco’s said he hoped that many more great players would emerged from this championship. Mr. Sameer Salgaocar Vice President AICF,  President GSCA & Mr. Suhas Asnodkar Secretary GSCA also spoke.

In todays games  Megna C.H. was given quite a tough fight by Maitreya in a Rui Lopez opening that went on for 67 moves. Other fancied   players like C.R. Varsha of TN, K Nivedita of TN & Akhila S of AP also scored easy wins.

Amoung the boys Divyam Kushagra(0) of Bihar tried the Reti opening against Abhimanyu Puranik (1) of MAH. However the Maharastra boy gained the positional advantage and scored the full point on the 60th move.

Goa’s Pinge, Velho & Riya Sawant Impress

Amoung the local players Goa’s Sumukh Pinge (1) played well against Queens Pawn Opening of Anirudh of KAR and checkmated him on the 38th move. David Velho (1) won his opponents Queen on the 5th move itself and wrapped up the game on the 23rd move.

Snehil Shetty and Rishubh Naik also are on one point. However Saish Mahale, Pranav Mahatme, Girish Kulkarni, Ritvik Parab lost to their outstation opponents.

Amoung the local Girls Riya Sawant won her game while Reema Naik, Nadia Dias,  Vidula Dempo & Gauri Hadkonkar lost their games.
