Girls & Revanth Reddy in Boys – Champions
G.V. Revanth Reddy of Andhra Pradesh and C.H. Meghna
of Kerala emerged champions in the boys and girls sections respectively at
the end of the 11th and final round of the National Under 7
Chess Championship held at Don Bosco High School, Panjim today.
The Chief Guest for Prize Distribution function was
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs
Mr. Pandurang Madkaikar. In his speech he stated that since Ivana Furtado
had won the World Championship The Government wants to give all
encouragement to chess. He made it a point to ask Ivana to sit on
the dais. Also present were
Fr. Wilfred Fernandes Administrator of Don Bosco’s,
Mrs Sonali Salgaocar, Chief Arbiter Shri. K. Murli Mohan, Deputy Arbiter
Shri Dattaram Pinge. GSCA Secretary Shri Suhas Asnodkar welcome and
thanked gathering.
Girls
Section
C. H. Meghna of Kerala played the Guico Piano against
Rutuja Bakshi (7) of MAH and took advantage when her opponent allowed her
to simplify into a winning pawn ending. Thus she was able to justify her
top seeding as the only rated player. Preethy
P of Pondicherry was runner up while C.R. Varsha of TN was third.
On the second board Meghna’s closest rival C. R.
Varsha (8) of TN blundered an exchange on move 15 against Preethy P (8.5)
of Pondicherry and was not able to recover although the game stretched on
for 69 moves.
On third board Goa’s Ivana Furtado’s (7.5)
poor form continued when even though she was exchange up against
Tejusvini P (8) of AP she blundered and lost.
In other
important games Madhumita M (8) of AP beat Chandreyee Hazra (7.5) of WB.
Akhila S
(7.5) of AP beat Senapati Puja (6.5) of KAR.
Shreya
Chakraborty (7) of WB beat Abhirami R (6) of TN
Pattnaik
Adhyasha (6) of Orrisa lost to Bharkavi S(7) of TN
Tejasvini
Sagar (6) of MAH lost to Choudhary Shreya (7) of MAH.

Section :
Revanth Reddy (9.5) of AP beat Sriniwas Venkatraman
(8) of MAH to emerge a clear half point ahead of the rest of the field.
His nearest rivals Sai Akshay Y (9) of AP and Shivam Srivastav (9) of UP
both drew their games.
Revanth Reddy faced the Nimzo Indian Defense against
Sriniwas and an equal position resulted. But Sriniwas lost his
concentration and gifted a Rook and the Championship to the lad from
Andhra.
Playing on first board Akshay lost a pawn in the
Giuco Piano Opening but Jerome Ebenezer (8.5) of TN could not take
advantage as the game drifted into a drawn Queen ending.
On the Third board
Shivam Srivastav playing the black side of Kings Indian Defense against
Yeshwant N. S. (8.5) of AP reached a Bishop Vs Knight endgame where he was
forced to agree for a draw.
