Two Rajasthan Girls Suffer Defeats

Higher rated boys had a smooth ride while two of the top seeded girls from
Rajasthan, Sonakshi Rathore and Nishtha Gupta lost their opening round
games at Chennai on November 4. This eleven round National Under-11 event
is being held at Sri Ramachandra Medical College campus and will run from
Nov 4-11.
V.R.Venkataachalam, Chancellor of the Sri Ramachandra Medical College
inaugurated the event by making f4. During the opening ceremony, world
Under-10 champion Girisk Koushik of Mysore, former world under-10 champion
Sahaj Grover of Delhi (he was not present at the function), M.Mahalakshmi
of Tamil Nadu the bronze medal winner of the World Under-8 Girls
championship at Batumi were felicitated. D.V.Sundar thanked the college
for providing the facilities and warned tough action against those
overaged players competing and made a request that if they withdraw before
the event starts no action will be taken. TNSCA President P.R.Venketrama
Raja President over the opening ceremony.
The Rs.70,000 prize money event attracted 212 boys and 101 girls from 24
states from India. The winners will represent India in the World and Asian
Youth Chess Championships in 2007. The event is sponsored by Sri
Ramachandra Medical College, Ramco Group and the Chennai Petroleum
Corporation Limited. The Chief Arbiter is K.Thirukkalathy of Megha Chess
Academy, Chennai.
The top two seeds in boys, Sahaj Grover of Delhi and K.Vijaykanth of
Andhra Pradesh won a piece each by pawn forks and registered easy opening
round victories. World Under-10 champion Girish Koushik won his opponent's
queen for two pieces and showed technique and patience to win the game.
The boys event came close to the all-time high entry record of 230
achieved also at Chennai in 2002.
