Priyanka Kumari Takes One Point Lead
By Arvind Aaron Press Officer
- AICF
Priyanka Kumari of Jharkhand shot into sole lead when she defeated
A.Gouthami of Amdhra Pradesh with a simple knight fork to win a bishop.
Priyanka leads the National Under-11 Championship with full six points.
She is a clear point ahead of the other players. In the boys section,
Yashas D of Shimoga in Karnataka took the lead with 6/6 and was soon
joined by Sahaj Grover of Delhi on the same score. Yashas is trained by
Sri Krishna Udupa and Sahaj Grover is trained by Gurpreet Pal Singh of
Northern Railway, Delhi.
The winners will represent India in the next
World Youth Chess Championship at Turkey in 2007 and the Asian
Championship too. Five rounds remain to be played. November 7 was little
tense day for the players as it had two rounds and also the pairings were
announced later on Monday due to possible announcing of the medical tests
done on suspected overaged players. Finally the medical results were made
available. J.Sahari (AP) was sent out of the tournament in the girls
section and Swarup Dey Sarkar (Ben) and T.Bharat

(Mani) were removed from the event as they were overaged. Most parents and
coaches were happy about the tests which were done on a democratic manner.
Anyone who suspected any of the players can make a complaint along with a
Rs.1,000 fee for the tests to be done. Last year also such tests were done
in the National Under-9 Championships at Chennai and three players (two
from AP and one from Jharkhand) were disqualified.
Two players
had a great day and it was World Under-10 champion Girish Koushik of
Mysore and National Under-9 G.V.Sai Krishna of Vijayawada. They both
scored two victories on the day. G.V.Sai Krishna's fifth round victory
over Sai Kiran will perhaps be the best game of this entire event. Sai
Krishna sacrificed a knight to open the file, then another knight to clear
way for his queen, then a rook to remove the defender and then find
checkmate.
