Girish Loses, Vanessa Upsets Two TN Players

Day two of the National Under-11 Chess Championship saw world under-10 champion Girish Koushik of Mysore crash to a shocking defeat at the hands of S.S.Manikandan of Madurai in the boys section. Vanessa D'Souza of Karnataka registered two crucial wins against former National U-7 champion J.Saranya and bronze medal winner of the girls

under-8 M.Mahalakshmi to be among the eight leaders on full three points. It was a mixed day for Karnataka on Sunday at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College. S.V.Srinath, once India's youngest FIDE rated player from Raipur lost a pawn and lost the queen ending to top seed

Sahaj Grover, the top seed from Delhi who is sponsored by the Sun Group. Second seed Vijaykanth of Andhra lost to his fellow Andhra player, Y.V.K.Chakravarthy with white pieces. National under-9 champion G.V.Sai Krishna of Vijayawada survived some anxious moments in the ending to win a lost ending against Megh Patel of Gujarat. Anurag Mhamal of Goa shocked Abhilash Reddy to be among the 19 leaders in the boys group with full three points.

Eight rounds remain to be played in this 313-player event. The winners will represent India in the World Youth Chess Championship at Turkey in 2007.
