Harikrishna Goes Down Fighting

Indian interest in the Cap d'Agde Masters ended in the quarter finals when P.Harikrishna of Hyderabad went down fighting to Andrei Volokitin of Ukraine in the fourth quarter final match in France on Tuesday.

Harikrishna came back from deficit to level the scores twice in the tie-break but after game seven, the match ended 4-3 and he did not get the reverse white game.  Earlier, the two rapid games were drawn. In the first rapid game, Harikrishna won two pieces for a rook but could not convert.

The rapid match started with two draws, then in the first set of tie-breaks, Volokitin won with white and
Harikrishna rebounded to level with his white game. In the next pair of games, the same pattern was witnessed. Volokitin won an exchange and the game when they played for the seventh time in a day. However, Harikrishna did not get his white turn. Harikrishna has a rating of 2674 and Volokitin 2645. Both players are 1986-born.

Meanwhile, top seed Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan who is rated 2729 is racing ahead having beaten French her Etienne Bacrot 2-0 in the second quarter finals.


In the semis, Karjakin plays Carlsen and Radjabov takes on Volokitin.

The quarter final results: S.Karjakin (Ukr) bt Zhao Xue (Chn) 1-1, 1.5-0.5, T.Radjabov (Aze) bt E.Bacrot (Fra) 2-0, L.Fressinet (Fra) lost to M.Carlsen (Nor) 0-2, P.Harikrishna (Ind) lost to A.Volokitin (Ukr) 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, 0-1.
